Emotions and Power Go Together
I recently came across this wonderful HBR podcast. It’s a very inspiring piece on why and when leaders should use emotion, including over emotional displays (as Obama recently..) however, the last 5 minutes were perhaps the most revealing regarding the work we do here, at Horse Eye: emotions & power go hand in hand.
The participant – an organizational culture professor at INSEAD, said that when he goes consulting in various companies, he easily spots the true leaders. How? By spotting those persons who encourage others to display emotion – speak up, get angry, get funny, get a feeling! Why? Simple – because they feel safe enough, powerful enough to display these behaviors themselves.
